Hello, and welcome to this Infrastructure-themed GeoSpatial Stream. I’m your host, Todd Danielson, and today’s Lead Sponsor is Bentley Systems.
Today’s Top Story is the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Ecuador on April 16, 2016, just less than one year after a similar-sized quake devastated Nepal. In Ecuador, at least 600 people died with another 27,000 or so injured.
Beyond human life, the second-hardest hit resource in these quakes is the local infrastructure such as buildings, roads and schools, with this event being no exception.
This broadcast has long-supported the work of Miyamoto International and its team of earthquake-disaster engineers and aid workers, who arrive at these difficult sites and help survey the scene, decide what can be saved and what must be torn down, and help citizens rebuild their lives and communities. They were again immediately onsite in Ecuador, and here’s an additional video about the tragedy.
That was today’s Top Story. I’ll be back with more news after this interview clip of Greg Bentley, the CEO of Bentley Systems, at the recent SPAR 3D Expo and Conference.
On May 6th, the $100-million-dollar Kansas City Streetcar opened for business, welcoming more than 32,000 passengers during its first weekend in service. This federally funded project made headlines, and caused envy, by moving from initial planning to revenue service in about five years. It has been estimated that the 2.2-mile streetcar route helped initiate more than 40 development projects in the area, totaling about $1.7 billion dollars in economic activity.
In industry headlines, Trimble announced a Call for Speakers for its Trimble Dimensions 2016 conference being held November 7th through 9th in Las Vegas. Here’s a link, and the deadline is June 20th.
While we’re at it, Bentley Systems also announced a call for submissions for its 2016 Be Inspired Awards program being held in London from November 1st through the 3rd. Here’s that link, with a slightly shorter deadline of May 30th. I may need to clone myself so I can attend both of those events.
Transoft Solutions is releasing on May 17th the 25th Anniversary Special Edition of its AutoTURN product, which adds Intellipath, the only swept-path tool with artificial intelligence for automating vehicle path trajectories and performing route analyses for vehicular circulation plans.
And Autodesk released 2017 versions of its Revit, Civil 3D and Infraworks 360 products built for improved efficiency, interoperability, cloud connectivity and better collaboration. Check out this complete listing of details and functionality on the Informed Infrastructure Web site.
For today’s Final Thought, here’s a clip of an interview we recorded with Robert Chmielowski, who worked on Chicago’s 150 North Riverside Building, which was the focus of the cover feature in the March/April issue of Informed Infrastructure.
