Hello, and welcome to this Asia-Pacific themed GeoSpatial Stream. I’m your host, Todd Danielson, and today’s Lead Sponsor is Autodesk University.
Today’s Top Story is the solar eclipse over parts of Indonesia and Micronesia on March 8th and 9th, 2016. The moon covered the sun, called totality, for a 145-kilometer-wide swath that stretched across Borneo, Sulawesi and other islands all the way to Hawaii. Here’s a mix of videos explaining the phenomenon with some footage of the actual eclipse.
That was today’s Top Story. I’ll be back with more news after this interview clip from Autodesk University that discusses 3D modeling projects in Australia.
In a cross-border collaboration with universities in Japan, engineers from the Department of Science and Technology successfully built The Philippines’ first remote-sensing micro satellite. The 50-kilogram DIWATA-1 micro satellite will be placed into orbit in early 2016.
The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources began using satellite data from NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, which maps tiny variations in Earth’s gravity that reveal underwater water reserves, to create monthly updates on groundwater storage changes in the Indus River basin.
And speaking of NASA, here’s a video about Tropical Cyclone Winston, which recently hit Fiji.
In industry headlines, Chinese search provider Baidu is expanding its Maps offering to Japan, Thailand, South Korea and Singapore to further compete with Google Maps.
IndoorAtlas partnered with Yahoo! Japan to deliver indoor positioning services across the country.
South Korea’s Taeyoung Information Systems selected Supergeo’s desktop software for GIS data processing.
And the German Aerospace Center and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency signed an Inter Agency Arrangement for Strategic Partnership.
For today’s Final Thought, I wanted to relay some of the excitement of actually watching the solar eclipse. So here’s some video footage recorded by Slooh, an online community observatory, from Palu, Indonesia.
